Getting Involved In University

Being at university can seem quite daunting and lonely at times so by getting involved with events at the uni and getting out and experiencing new things is such a good way to liven yourself up and be more interactive.

One thing that I would recommend doing when you get to university is joining a society, whether its about sports, culture and religion, reading, or even just eating food and having a chat, getting involved in at least one is a brilliant way to feel included and a great way to meet new people. Most uni’s have a vast range of societies and there is more than likely something that you’ll be interested in; for me it was the reading society and once a month we meet up to discuss the chosen book of the month whilst watching a film, eating, drinking, and just chatting. It’s a great way that I found to get myself out of my room.

If you’re the kind of person who thrives on going out in the evenings to bars or clubs, there are going to be plenty available for you. Always remember to check the reviews of the place and make sure that it is safe, and never go alone. Going out, partying and living the ‘uni life’ is a fantastic experience and a way to relieve the stress of university and your courses and a brilliant way to have fun with friends and any new people you meet whilst out. So go out and enjoy!

I think going out with friends is a major highlight of many people’s university lives and is something that creates long lasting memories. If you have the opportunity to go out, I do highly recommend doing it, it’s something that is relaxing and fun, something that holds no pressure. Its good for your mental health and just a great thing to do in general.

Another really important thing to get involved with is the gym or some sort of physical exercise. Keeping fit and healthy is vial when you’re at university, not only for your physical health but also your mental one. If you aren’t keeping fit not only will you feel physically drained and unhealthy but it can have major negative impacts on your mental wellbeing. Even if all you do is go out on a walk every day, that is still better than doing nothing. You can work out with friends or if you prefer by yourself, but either way I can’t recommend enough incorporating some sort of physical exercise into your daily routine.

Though it is extremely important to interact and get involved in activities whilst being at uni, don’t feel pressured or different because you don’t do these things. Everyone is different and people do things in their own ways and in their own times. However I do suggest maybe doing at least one of these a week, you’ll quickly see a change in how you feel both physically and mentally, and it can change your university experience for the better.

Try not to stay locked in your room constantly its not good for anyone, I know anxiety can be a massive reason as to why people don’t get involved in things, but by doing small social activities once a week and taking small steps at a time you will be able to see such a difference. One small walk a week in your local area or an area in which you feel comfortable is a great place to begin, and from that you can only go forward.

Good luck to anyone starting to get involved, the first step is all you!
