I expected the worst.
After seeing TikTok’s and reviews of the film, I had mixed opinions on whether to watch it. At first I wanted to boycott it, after all of the controversy the film and cast had brought, I was questioning if the film was worth the hype.
Eventually I gave in, after over a month of the film being in cinemas I decided to go and see it.
I will not lie. I liked it. It was actually pretty good, considering the stress behind it all.
Florence Pugh (Little Women, Midsommar, Black Widow) gave an amazing performance of Alice, a woman forced into a simulation of the perfect life by her husband. Not that I doubted her, she is an amazing actress, one of my favourites of all time. She made the
experience of watching the film a whole lot more fun.
Not doubting the amazing supporting cast Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, Olivia Wilde, Nick Kroll, Kiki Layne, who all played their characters perfectly. To me, the casting was pretty spot on, I think that was a great part of the film, along with the plot, which IMDb described as ‘A 1950s housewife living with her husband in a utopian experimental community begins to worry that his glamorous company may be hiding disturbing secrets.’
The trailer seems misleading, I didn’t really grasp an idea of what it really was going to be about. The story itself flows perfectly, giving you a sight into important side-lines of the story. Kiki Laynes character plays an important part to the film as Margaret, experiencing the same things Alice goes onto encounter. However, her character wasn’t explored as much as she should have been. It wasn’t clear on how Margaret started finding out key parts or why she was doing certain things, delving into her character would’ve given the audience more depth of what was going on and what was to occur.
From start to finish I was hooked, so invested in finding out what was actually happening; questioning what was going on, how things were occurring, not to mention why they were happening. The ending answers most of these questions. A good film (to me) has a closed ending unless they know there doing a sequel, I wouldn’t say the ending was much of a cliff hanger, but there’s no need for a sequel. I had seen many spoilers online, I did not expect the ending to say the least, I was quite shocked and there were many times in this movie that my jaw hit the floor.
As previously stated, although the film has so many controversies it wasn’t terrible. If you are into the theme of psychological films, this one has an interesting take on the genre story line.
Would I watch it again?
Yes, I would, it was so interesting and maybe watching it a second time I could grasp the clues being shown in the beginning.
If I were to rate it out of 10, based on an overall for a film, I would say a 7/10.
