Avatar: The Way of Water

Updated: Jan 17, 2023

13 years. That’s how long fans have waited for the sequel to be released and now as of December 16th we finally have it on the big screen. Avatar Way of Water graced our cinemas on the lead up to Christmas and it was the perfect gift any fan could ask for.

The 2009 original Avatar movie sits in the silver medal position second to Avengers Endgame when it comes to “the highest-grossing movies of all time” according to IMBD, the largest movie database on the internet, and it was a movie that broke the cinematic industry when it was released. The graphics and CGI used in the film made waves in the movie world and in my opinion made it way ahead of its time.

The sequel hit the cinemas with a lot of fans hoping that it would live up to the original and as a fan I can say that it didn’t disappoint.

The movie was fantastic from the graphics to the story line, to the characters on screen everything about the movie lived up to my expectations and in some parts exceeded them.

The movie saw a new species of avatar being introduced, those from the sea kingdom, known as the Omaticaya Clan. With the appearance of this clan the world of Pandora was brought to a different light. It was fascinating to see this different clan interact with the Sully family, after they had to flee there home due to the invasion of the ‘sky people’.

In the original movie the Na’vi were the only species of avatar that we got to witness on screen for a reasonable amount of time; an appearance was made by other clans right at the end of the movie but not much was seen of them. So by making this new avatar movie and incorporating a different side of Pandora was truly amazing to see as fan.

In the movie a lot happened, we got to see how Jake Sully lived his life after permanently becoming an avatar, and we got see him protecting his family and planet. When the family had to move to stay with the Omaticaya they had to learn and adapt to their way of living and the way that it played out on screen was magnificent. We got to see the Sully family and the Na’vi in a different light and it was perfect the way that it was done.

If I had to criticize one thing it would be the beginning of the film. For me it was little slow and it could have dove into the main chunk of the film a little quicker, but apart from that the movie had me on the edge of seat the entire time.

My emotions were all over the place watching the film, from laughing, to crying, to anticipation as to what was coming next. The movie ticked all of my boxes and was one I would definitely watch again.

It is defiantly one you could watch either with your family or on your own, either way you’ll have a great time. I was worried that because of the length of the movie being 3 hours and 12 minutes I would have to leave like a hundred times to go to the toilet but to me the movie felt like it was only an hour and half at most; time literally flew past and before I knew it the movie was over, and what a movie it was.

So if you were a big fan of the first one or even if you’ve never watched the original, I do encourage you to watch Avatar: The Way of Water because it is a cinematic masterpiece.
